# Ids and prefixes

Every Norbix id starts with a short prefix that tells you what kind of thing it is.

Norbix gives every project, user, template, trigger and file an id. When you read an id in Cloud, in a log or in an API answer, you should know at once what it points to — and Norbix should refuse an id of the wrong kind before it does anything with it.

## How Norbix models it

An id has two parts joined by an underscore: a **prefix** for the kind of thing, and a 22-character **base62** value (letters and digits).

* The prefix is lower case and fixed per kind. `pr_` is always a project, `usr_` is always a user.
* Ids are case-sensitive. Copy them exactly.
* An id with the wrong prefix is refused with the error code `CM-ERRORS-GENERIC-003` and the message `Id is in wrong format. Expected prefix: pr_` (the prefix the call expected).
* Norbix creates the ids. You never build one yourself — you take it from Cloud, from an API answer, or from the SDK / CLI.

Two ids are used only inside Norbix and never shown to you: `aops_` (operations case) and `stf_` (Norbix staff member).

### Project id in a host name

A host name cannot hold `_` or mixed case, so a project id in a host name uses a second form: `pr-` and 32 lower-case hex characters, for example `pr-4c0e7b1a8f9d4e2aa1b3c5d7e9f0a1b2.api.<your domain>`.
