# Stop a campaign

Stop an email campaign that is scheduled or still sending.

**Where:** Email → Campaigns → a campaign → **Stop campaign** · `/projects/<project>/emails/campaigns/<campaignId>/view`

Stop is the brake: a scheduled campaign never starts, and a running one sends no more batches.

## Before you start

* A campaign in status **Scheduled**, **Registered**, **Started** or **Processing**. The red **Stop campaign** button is shown only then.
* Permission `email:update` (built-in **Developer** or **Administrator**).

## Steps

1. Open the campaign from the [list](/codemash/cloud/emails/campaigns.md) (**View**). Here: the scheduled `Monthly newsletter`.

2. Press **Stop campaign**. The browser asks: "Stop this campaign? Batches already being sent will finish, but no new recipients will be emailed. This cannot be undone." Press **OK**. The button reads **Stopping…** for a moment.

## Result

The status badge and **Status** change to **Stopped** and the button disappears. No new batch starts, and nobody who was not yet emailed gets the email. A batch that was already sending may finish its current emails; the campaign still stays **Stopped**.

* **Stopped is final.** There is no resume.
* **An ended campaign cannot be stopped.** Stopping a Completed, Failed or Stopped campaign through the API is refused with `CM-ERRORS-CAMPAIGNS-016` ("The campaign has already ended … and cannot be stopped").
* **Turning Email off** stops every running and scheduled campaign at once — see [Settings](/codemash/cloud/emails/settings.md).

## Change or remove it later

Open **Actions** on the stopped campaign:

* **Create new from this** — opens [the campaign form](/codemash/cloud/emails/campaigns/new.md) with the same template picked.
* **Delete campaign...** — the browser asks "Delete this campaign? Its batches and message log are deleted with it. This cannot be undone."; after **OK** you are back on the list.
