# MCP servers

When and why to connect outside MCP servers to your project, which ones run today, and how the chat uses them.

A model on its own only knows what it was trained on. Your users ask about things outside your project too: "find the latest docs on this", "is my Stripe payment through?", "what changed in the repository?". **MCP** (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that gives a model such tools — and many services already offer an MCP server.

{% hint style="info" %}
This page is about **outside** MCP servers that *your project's* AI chat uses. To let *your own* coding agent work on Norbix, see the Norbix [MCP server](/codemash/ai/developers/mcp-server.md).
{% endhint %}

## How Norbix models it

An **MCP integration** stores one MCP server for one environment of the project: the server, a name, its secret (encrypted) and how Norbix talks to it — the **transport**:

| Transport | How it works | Runs on the managed service |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| `HttpStream` | Norbix calls the server over the network at its **Server URL**. | yes |
| `Stdio` | Norbix starts the server as a program (**Command** + **Arguments**) next to the Hub and talks to it over input and output. | no — the Hub has no `docker`, `npx` or `uvx` to start it |

| Server                                                           | Transport  | Gives the chat                          |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------- | --------------------------------------- |
| [Brave Search](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/brave-search.md) | HttpStream | web search                              |
| [GitHub](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/github.md)             | HttpStream | repositories, issues, pull requests     |
| [Stripe](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/stripe.md)             | HttpStream | customers, payments, subscriptions      |
| [MongoDB](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/mongodb.md)           | Stdio      | a MongoDB database — cannot start today |
| [Obsidian](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/obsidian.md)         | Stdio      | an Obsidian vault — cannot start today  |
| [Playwright](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/providers/playwright.md)     | Stdio      | a browser — cannot start today          |

Every **enabled** MCP integration of the environment is offered to the chat. There is no default and no per-assistant choice: to stop the chat from using a server, [disable it](/codemash/cloud/ai/mcp/disable.md). The server's tools act with **your** secret, not the end user's, so connect only servers whose every tool you are happy for any signed-in user to trigger — prefer read-only keys at the provider.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Stdio servers (MongoDB, Obsidian, Playwright) save, but the Hub cannot start them, so the chat cannot use them. Use an HttpStream server, or run the server yourself behind a URL and connect that.
{% endhint %}

**Test integration** only checks that the secret is stored; it does not call the server.
